Stephen Spielberg's AI.
Particularly sad that Kubrick didn't get to do it.

It was his movie.

I think it's better for me to do it cause I'm a cry baby. When nobody's looking of course...

The saddest film came into my head at first was:

by Lynne Ramsay

this is a delicate piece.

The Straight Story, David Lynch. Jerked all the tears right out of me. (Million Dollar Baby too, actually--although Eastwood reading Yeats in Irish is quite ridiculous, since Yeats could only write in English).

Yup and Yup. I listed these in the most disturbing movie thread.

I also agree with Life is Beautiful. One of the most beautiful and sad movies ever made.

Agreed. However, I think Speilburg did it justice. I imagine Kubrick's version being a lot darker with less emotion.

Without thinking, the most recent 'sad' film (actually it's a documentary) that I have seen, has to be 'Grizzly Man'. It's about this guy Timothy Treadwell. I just happened to switch onto National Geographic the other night, and the first thing that caught my attention was the incredible footage. So I sat through the rest.... it was unbelievable stuff. Granted, it fits into more categories than 'Sad'. I honestly thought it was joke at first, but it's based on a true story! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Treadwell

Yeats did understand Irish though and he translated various myths as part of the cultural revival movement in the late nineteenth century.
