I'm no pc wizard. I have a visioneer 5800 scanner which I'm trying to attach to my wife's laptop. (Bear in mind she is Thai and her laptop has been working in thai language for 20 years, well not 20 years [it's a toshiba satellite apple job??]) Her laptop language is set to english and is XP Home edition. I put set up disc for the scanner in and it will not start. I logged on to visioneer web and downloaded software for 58xx scanner. It has gone to a place on the pc I can't find. I used wizard to try to detect, but to no avail. Anybody know what the prob is? I'm useless with software.

I sometimes download stuff and have no idea where it's going. I do it again and try to figure out WHERE it's going this time.
P-
I actually DL most everything to my desk top. That is why it's a mess.

Try contacting MCA, a member who has been very helpful with tech problems.
from a quick search online it looks like this is a common problem with using this particular scanner on XP (some hardware just wont work on XP - i also experienced this with an older scanner I had).
the best i could find was :
http://support.visioneer.com/KnowledgeBase/Articles/VIS1004%20-%20ReInstalling%20Your%20Scanner%20Driver.html
in step 3, remember to follow the part for Win200/XP users and see if this helps.
just to make life a little easier here is the link to the driver you need to download in step 1 (I think):
http://support.visioneer.com/drivers/5800.exe

Originally posted by mikelomif it thinks it is a camera then it is at least seeing that something has been plugged in - this is what i was wanting to check.
No, doesn't see it. Appears to be looking for a camera??/
the fact that it is looking at it as being a camera isnt a big deal as the two are similar (kinda), since they both take images and digitise them.
when you run the 5800.exe file it should have asked you to plug in the scanner - once scanner is plugged in it should then install the required drivers - did it do this?
try ensuring that no other USB devices are plugged when you attempt this to ensure that it is detecting it correctly.
also check out the link provided by daemon sin it appears to be related to your issue.
