Good or Bad?🤔

Good, if one is self-employed.

Bad, if, like Donald Trump, one has really no substance behind the facade to promote.

If you are self-employed and good at what you do, you don't need self promotion as word of mouth will do that for you. One of my brother in laws built fishing boats for over 40 years never advertised and had to turn down people each year, he had so much business.

Most of the people I know who made it big in the commercial world were great self promoters. Its rare to find someone who is self-effacing at the top.

Bad? Well it carried him to the U.S. presidency. Love him or loathe him, if he achieved that through self-promotion despite a lack of substance, then it was good for him and for the tens of millions of people he inspired.

I think it showed you how easily people are sucked in!

Very true. Some get sucked into pranks.

Some pretend to get sucked in and then howling about it for the next 1-2 years is a form of self-promotion.

Is it like attention-seeking?

In my case, I took it to mean steps to make oneself or one's skill set known in certain quarters in order to open up the possibility of access to clients in accordance with some strategy or professionally wise way forward.

When I said: "Some pretend to get sucked in and then howling about it for the next 1-2 years is a form of self-promotion" I was referring to "the prank", and Very Rusty and Ghost of a Duke's posturing over it. I was replying to The Gravedigger.
