I keep my short like GBS. It takes less overall time and effort to keep it trimmed than it does to shave every day.
On my thirtieth birthday I shaved it all off, and then went to a bar where you could get a free pitcher of beer if it was your birthday.
The skin on my face looked so smooth I had to show ID to prove I was over 18 years old... apparently having a beard is a good way to protect the skin, because after a week or two of shaving every day I began looking like a thirty-year old.

I think maybe when he says "full" beard he means a honking big bushy beard. Those are good for scaring away wild animals and collecting bread crumbs, but if you happen to find small birds nesting inside it's probably a good idea to trim it back a bit.
