I have a laptop running windows 98 and the old style mouse with a ball in it.
I bought a USB optical mouse, plugged it into the USB port and it didn't work. I then connected the adaptor and plugged it into the port where the original mouse was and it worked.
Unfortunately, the arrow pointer moves about 5 times slower than when i had the old ball mouse plugged in. I set the pointer speed to max but it is still way too slow.
Any advice that isn't sarcastic?

I use a Kensington Expert Trackball. When I don't have the software, it runs like you say.
Find the software, run it... and there should be a place to tell the mouse to move better.
What mouse is it?

It sounds as though you need to check and see if your computer and your new mouse are compatible. Sometimes just because it may work a little doesn't mean it is for that particular system. I tried the same idea with my old NES and a NES64 I was borrowing. The 64 wouldn't hook up to my TV, but it would hook up to the NES and the NES to the TV. It worked slightly, but it had limited color and flashed off and on alot. Also, you could check the color setting on your computer. It sounds stupid, but i have some things on my computer that only work in "True Color", whatever that is...
Hope this helps in some odd way. 🙂

Thanks....how do I find the right drivers?
it might be on the website for the company which makes your mouse (if they have one). IF it is even compatible with win98 that is

Almost all (if not all) USB devices come with a disk that has the drivers on it. If that doesn't work, it may just be win98 which doesn't like USB anything very much even if it's second edition which supposedly supports USB. I'm not sure if win98 has a problem with USB 2.0 which is probably what the mouse is.

if there was no disc and it claimed to be compatible then would i be right to presume your "adapter" came with the mouse?? if so then maybe it will only work on 98 via the adapter and it might not be possible to find a suitable driver online.
what make/model of mouse is it?
