I recently received a snare drum as a birthday present. I have been through many a snare drum, but this one has a cheap, almost pingy sound on the aftertones. Does anyone know how to tone down this annoying "ring"?

or a narrow strip of felt laid under the skin (inside the drum) - laid like a mathematical chord of a circle ...

I thought you could also adjust the "snare" mechanism.

You can. But that just effects the 'rattle' sound after I think. It won't stop any prolonged resonance of the top skin.

Yep, my drummer uses a few pieces of duct tape. Other drummers I know cut a thin donut out of an old snare skin and use that.
