Thanks everyone for the thoughts, wishes and prayers. Here's an update:
The thing they found in Yuko's esophagus (I know how to spell it now...) also takes up a fair chunk of the top of her stomach. The 3 doctors I've seen so far are amazed at the size of the thing, and that she hasn't felt any pain or discomfort before now. Anyway, they're 98% sure they know it's a malignant cancerous tumour. They will have the biopsy results on Friday, then they'll know the other 2%. She has to stay in the hospital until then, in any case. She can't eat or drink, she's on "an incredibly efficient liquid-based weight-loss programme", the doctors told me.
If the results confirm the doctors' thoughts and opinions, she'll stay in hospital until they can operate, probably about the end of September. Then another month to be sure it's all gone, and at least until the end of the year laying down at home.
Today I had to cancel the delayed honeymoon, which obviously hurt both of us, as she was looking forward to seeing Poland and we were both looking forward to seeing my son. Next year, maybe.
I have to continue working. No work = no money. The same for Yuko. The hospital bill will probably wipe out all our savings, because insurance doesn't cover everything.
Sh;t happens, right?
The one thing I'm glad about, and really grateful for is my friends and my students, and probably most of the people who read this. Thanks for your PMs, and comments in this thread. So if any of you want to come and play a game of chess in a hospital ward, Yuko needs a good teacher because she keeps saying that horses run in straight lines and jump over things...
