@shallow-blue saidYou might want to take that up with moonbus. He said "Each rebound would be less energetic than the previous one".
No, it wouldn't. An oscillating system within a greater one would - entropy, and all. But an oscillating universe would have nowhere to lose entropy nor energy to, and would therefore continue to spring back and forth eternally.
Oscillating Universe
1. Are we talking about a universe that goes all the way back to a big crunch, then starts over with another big bang? And this process repeats over and over again.
2. Or are we talking about a variation of this theory that says the universe stops short of reaching the crunch point and bounces back into expanding?
I assumed we were talking about the second one.
@kilroy70 saidDo you have a gearshift knob made from a human bone?

@kevin-eleven saidSometimes I think that the only people still posting here are at least somewhat mentally ill. You may hold the number one ranking, however.
Keep your hands out of my crotch unless you want them chopped off.
Anyway, in a meager attempt to stop the unraveling, I confess to having an ulterior motive for proposing bouncy springs over vibrating strings.
I can't yet prove this, but I believe in the quantum realm there exist uber-tiny sentient beings who at this very moment are arguing among themselves over the proposed existence of macro sentient beings engaged in examining the micro quantum realm which theoretically (but undoubtedly) could be occupied by very small sentient forms of life.
If they exist in two dimensional form then perhaps strings, which appear to occupy 3 dimensions but in reality only occupy 2, could be the key to bridging the gap making it possible to set up lines of communication.
I call this the "Horton hears a Who" effect.
@kilroy70 saidCorrection, I meant to say:

If they (the life forms) exist in two dimensional form then perhaps springs (not strings)
precision is very important
@kevin-eleven saidThat I'm able to type with one finger on a tiny pop up keyboard is also to a meager extent impressive.
@Kilroy70
That you can type at all despite the cosmic oscillations is to a meager extent impressive.
@badradger saidI agree. The universe can be described as a big stretchy bag of stuff (chips) expanding until counter balancing forces prevent any further expansion.
we need to link your spring theory to my big bag theory
After that it's a crap shoot as to whether the bag begins to deflate or is held in place with cosmic twist ties.
