Watched Return of the Jedi when I was 12 or so.
Came out of that movie feeling better than after any movie ...
So for that reason alone Star Wars has a place in my heart.
But no.7 ???
What a stinker!!! I picked every scene coming up and left the cinema wondering what all the fuss was about. It really did suck and has made me wary of seeing the next one.
It was a rehash of ‘a new hope’, but with less flair.
A very high: “Oh, really, another star destroying weapon blown up by small aircraft.” Level.
I can understand the first death star suffering from internal saboutage... but surely someone in the Empire / first order would have evaluated such an expensive project and learnt a bloody lesson!
The only real problem with a phantom menace is that the pod race takes too long.
The second problem is shattered expectations.
People watched star wars and empire when they were pre-teens / teens; in a time when very few films had such brilliant special effects.
As adults in the era of CGI they expected the exact same thrill.
Attack of the clones is a good film. It’s main problem is the love affair. It’s just not acted very well. Normally, in Star Wars, acting isn’t a problem, but it was during the love affair, because that’s essential for the transition from Anakin to Vader.
As for Anakin’s growing unease, lack of patience and anger at Kenobi... that was reasonably executed.
My only gripe with return of the jedi is Chewie’s Tarzan call. Otherwise it’s a really good film.
My favourites would be a new hope and ESB. But that’s mainly on nostalgic reasons.
If I had to rate the movies, I reckon revenge of the Sith and Rogue One are probably the best.
The last jedi (saw it yesterday) is more rotj than esb.
