I never heard of spalpeen. Gombeen is a word I use quite a lot when I want to call a friend an idiot. I wouldn't normally postfix it with man, but it would normally be prefixed with a f in.

Read my post and try to understand my point.
Re my "incorrect" use of gombeen. I'm lucky that I live in Kerry where there aren't pedantic irish literature students correcting everybody's use of their language, in relaxed exchanges amongst friends.

That sounds terrible. And I used to like Ireland. 🙁
I think the interest in sport is due to the numerous excuses that it gives us to get pished.

And it wasn't "incorrect", it was plainly wrong. I'm not a Gaelic student- I just thought every Irish bloke with a Leaving Cert. to his name would know that. It's not a pedantic point- it's just it was already mentioned, and while you assume you are on a higher plain, morally, I take it, it might be handy for someone to bring to your attention in the name of balance that you are clearly on a lower plain in other respects.

If I also turn into a racist, is my behaviour not stooping to the racist's level? Would you not agree that people should try to rise above other people's offensiveness, rather than themselves becoming an offensive person. I never stated that I thought you were a racist. Read my comment again. You might notice that I was mostly against CFT's positions.
As for Gombeen, I gave my take on it. My grandfather always called me a gombeen when I messed around as a kid. Unfortunately, I neglected to check that my grandfathers usage was correct. I'm not too worried if I got the official usage slightly wrong, I decided not to choose the sterile style of google definitions, as I felt my personal experience of the word would be more interesting to Bosse, as I'm sure he has access to google himself and can research the raw definitions himself.
I read and post replies, as and when I find I have something to say, so I hadn't read your immensely interesting definition when I responded to Bosse's post.
