Anyone else use Audacity for editing sound? I can't make it export as an mp3 which is a real pain in the hoop. I downloaded the pile of crap they said I needed but apparently the file doesn't extract so Vista finds it when I do a search... Audacity doesn't believe it's there.

Question two - if I can't get Audacity to work properly, is there another audio editing tool available which allows the same flexibility?

I use Audacity - works ok for me. [with XP - never tried with Vista]

I think it's mainly for Linux - now that you mention it. 🙁

As a stop-gap you should be able to export it as a wav and then convert it to mp3.

That's the first message. So I downloaded LAME and extracted the files with winRAR, but can't find the .dll that audacity is looking for once the files are unzipped. I can find it within the zipped file, but even when I extract it alone audacity doesn't work.

I use audacity at work where it's all kosher, I just haven't actually exported as anything yet at home and I'd rather not have to start over since I've done all the work already, it's just a matter of making it usable.

Even that would be fine... didn't even think to try to export as anything else. I just assumed if it wouldn't do one it wouldn't do the other.

Just tried it and it exported the .wav, perfect. Converting is easy enough since I already have a hundred programs for converting this into that (wav to mp3, avi to mpg, etc.)

Thank you Doctor, you're a genius.

Did you try this?

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3

maybe if you download the lame encoder directly, it might work.

Yeah, that's the one I used. I don't know - I guess Vista doesn't like LAME. Anyway, I think I may be able to use the file as a .wav and not even bother converting.

Thanks to all who posted suggestions, and even to those who just wanted to tell me they also use Audacity.

Actually it's just some stuff I'm trying to learn how to do - web development junk. I have all this high-end software (Dreamweaver, Sony Vegas 7, Photoshop, etc.) and I'm just trying to embed some sound and video in a website, only I wanted custom sound and video so I started editing mp3 recordings which took ages and then I couldn't export them in mp3 format which was annoying.

Basically I have no idea what I'm doing once I get past the basic HTML and I'm learning the rest (javascript and such) by trial and error. Every once in a while I get totally stuck and that's when drunken 'face shows up asking questions.
