"use by" is honest (I'll be horrible after that date" )
"best before" is hypocritical ("still OK after, maybe?" )
"packed on" is uncompromisingly true, but not terribly informative (is 3 days OK? is 10? is 453?)
but they're all a bit hit-and-miss; I've eaten eggs 5 weeks past their UBD, yoghurt 2 weeks, and some bottled stuff 3 years, but wouldn't touch a loaf of bread with a UBD two days hence.
