IF the forums are boring, it is because WE are boring.

The forums don't exist in a vacuum. WE are the forums.

No one person or group made them boring. Frankly, they were boring when I got here.

If TSM is so boring, why do posters spend so much time in our threads. Almost every thread we start runs to 100s if not 1000s of posts. We may be a lot of things, but the evidence does not suggest that you all find us boring. Quite the contrary, I've noticed an unhealthy obsession with me and the TSM from quite a number of posters.

Dude, it's a site of chess nerds, how exciting is that?

The other major reason that people find the forums boring is that they miss their rec total.

You may ask yourself if you fit into this group. AND, if you do, was the unbridled pursuit of reccs a worthwhile use of your time.

Is there still a rec system on this site - it's rubbish if there is.

Let it go, Red Night.

the forums are only a part of this chess site. The main focus of the site should be chess. Why the huge fuss about forums / recs. Is there something i'm missing like the recs are a social standing thing or something?

😕

Come on anybody give me a little help here 😕

The point Red Night is trying to make, and the one you missed, is that rec counts now belong to the recced posts, and not the people who wrote them, thus ending the popularity contest and the unending quest for the perfect flame that will earn the poster the most recs.

My point has always been that some of you can't seem to wean yourself off getting that "high" from getting recs. Come on, it's a chess site. Build your self-esteem out in the real world, not here.

(Of course, that's much harder, but the plus side is that it doesn't require being an ass.)

To: Silverstriker... It's greatly to your credit that you don't understand what all the huge fuss is about. You must have a life... Congrats! 🙂

I can't really help you except to say I think you are on point.

I know I miss them. Not a lot but I do.

Maybe it is a pointless way to spend time but I could see that being said about all the time spent on this forum or maybe even site. I could go one step further and say most of the time I spend on the internet isn't worthwhile. I didn't have an unbridled pursuit but they were an added bonus.

Will: You're not alone. Russ' decision to remove the rec totals from user's forum profile has led to a great deal of consternation, lamentation, obfuscation, and even recrimination.

I see the logic in removing them, but I liked to have that little number slowly ticking up in my profile, I left the site over the summer so saw it was gone when I came back. I think it may mean I will use the forums less, and take less effort with my posts not as a conscious effort but as an effect. I liked to make a post that I thought others would find as funny. I can't remember how many I had I think it was 150 to 170 but I felt, in my own pathetic way that was some sort of achievement. Well for an activity that basically burns the time between times I am actually doing something.
