So i Logs on to Ebay looking for X item (not a lot of X's in this part of the world). I see the fellow for me, the bidding has less than a day to go, and the item is only €0.88 . . .yes !!
So i check the page, the item is cool, the seller is in a far away country, so i expect P&P, and i check other things from the same guy. I spy a chess Board. . . €0.88. . . OMG, i can't believe my luck. . .i bid.
Today i recieve two e-mails about the items i bid for, i have won my bids, and given a "click here to paypal your items" link.
The cheeky Bar steward wanted €102.00 P&P for one item, and €44.00 for the other ðŸ˜
This is a rip. I e-mailed him and politely told him to Stick his items up. . .on Ebay again.
Does this happen often ?

My boss paid $250 for an ipod that the guy never shipped.
A friend bought a hard drive and when he received it, it was simply wrapped in a piece of typing paper. Needless to say it wouldn't work at all. He complained but the seller said he'd have to take it up with the post office cause they damaged it.
Another friend bought an item for $50 and used PayPal. A month later someone from ebay bought a new computer for $2000 using his credit card number! Yes, he was charged and it took weeks to get his account credited back the money.
I bought a Space Invader Deluxe arcade game for $1700 that crashed the first week I had it. The seller said he'd fix it but never did - had to fix it myself.

You should always check the shipping charges before you bid.
By the way, you can back out of something that you bid for and won. Let me know if you need help with this.

I’ve purchased several items on e-bay. A 1950’s Russian chess clock ($65!!) I bought from a guy in Latvia, computer software, some old tournament chess books, a home steam press, and my wife has bought musical instruments and several other items. They have all arrived promptly, well packaged, and with the exception of one small item my wife purchased, were exactly as advertised.
Did you check the feed back section of the seller? If they aren’t close to 100%, I move on.
WARNING:
There is a Paypal scam somebody tried. Got an e-mail supposedly from Paypal saying a third party tried to access my account for an e-bay purchase and to click on the link to go to Paypal to fix the problem. It took me to a site that LOOKED like Paypal. Supposedly I bought a prom dress on e-bay. They wanted a lot of credit card information like the number on the back of the card. I deleted the message, went to the real Paypal site and noticed some subtle differences in appearance between the real site and the fake one.
Originally posted by masscati also know numerous people who have purchased form ebay without problem - you have to just make sure you have fully read the ad and made sure the seller has almost 100% positive feedback.

in connection with your warning - I had an email from "my bank" apprently, which was asking for all of my details (number on back of card, security question, mothers maiden name etc) all looking very official and correct ... till i checked the URL. it was close but not exactly what it should have been - i wonder how many idiots fill this in and then wonder why thier money went walk-about lol
Originally posted by huckleberryhoundYou should never buy something without being clear on the shipping prince first. A common tactic many sellers use is that since eBay charges them a sellers fee, based on the prince of the item, they'll sell something for far less than it's worth but then charge exorbitant shipping. Since there are no fees to them on the shipping, this is where they make most of their money. They'll end up having to give eBay a smaller cut on the transaction if they sell the item for $1 with $10 shipping than they would if they sold the same item for $10 with $1 shipping.

Originally posted by arrakisSurprised they are still in business hahaha. Of course they are still in business, do you realize how much money they make from people selling their stuff on there? The money they end up having to return to people in cases of fraud is nothing compared to what they make.

You will always find fraudulent sellers on ebay and must always read everything in the listing. Also remember that ebay owns paypal and this is just another way for them to take even more money out of whatever the seller got for selling their item. They do not charge anything on shipping so the smart thing to do as a seller is sell an item for $0.99 and then charge like $100 for shipping to get to the real price you are selling your item at. The shipping cost is almost always on the item page somewhere and if it isn't you should contact the seller about the costs BEFORE you bid on the item. If you ever have any questions they should always be asked BEFORE bidding. From ebay's side it is your own fault for not asking about the shipping before you bid.
As for fake paypal emails, it looks like paypal and has links to privacy policies and stuff for the real paypal. All you have to do is simply look at the web address you are at and you will see it is not paypal.com and that it is not https (a secure server which is the only thing paypal would use to ask you for any sensative info) Furthermore, paypal will never ask you for your banking pin and alot of that other bogus info they try to get you to put in. Also notice that you can put in any email adress and any password and it will allow you to log in. Only a complete idiot would fall for that scam.
Originally posted by rwingettthat is incorrect, the price of the item would have to be more than that for it to make a difference. It is true if you did say $1 for the item and $500 for shipping as opposed to $500 for the item and $1 for the shipping.
