I read somwhere that Pancho Villa's "troops" regularly went into battle stoned. And many of them later migrated to the American Southwest.
You may be right...I had read that about the religious devilism some time back on the web somewhere. It would certainly have given the police a good reason to put minorities in jail.

Can anybody think of a good reason why it is kept illegal? Exclude the mind altering effects as if you use this, then alcohol should also be illegal.

Exclude the mind altering effects as if you use this, then alcohol should also be illegal. Alcohol is not the problem. It would not affect their minds if they would drink modestly.

You think thats a lot??? 400,000 Americans died last year because of tobacco! And I don't think it should be banned. Its Kentuckys main cash crop!
U.S.A. population : Approx. 300,000,000
So in fact, to have 45,000 Canadians die each year from tobacco use is very high.

Originally posted by chancremechanicHave you read the ingredients that go into each toxic cigarette? I would never suggest that we ban "Canadian Bacon", but we can not compare the two.
What next, food? How many people die as a result of eating fattening food? Are you going to suggest banning pizza, icecream, Canadian Bacon?🙄...

Originally posted by chancremechanicActually, there are very many reasons that Canada is a great place to live (including high taxes on the sale of cigarettes to compensate for the large number of people dying from cancer). But there is also a strong movement here for the decriminilization of pot ... Hopefully our neighbours to the South won't have to much input in to this decision 😉
...besides, don't you feel Canada is socialist enough?
D.
Originally posted by chancremechanicI agree. What else do you need to figure out that it's bad for you? Everybody knows the stats. Everybody knows the risks. Freedom of choice baby. Ain't it beautiful?
Wouldn't work because tobacco would go on the Black Market, and that would hurt Canada and help the US tobacco grower...besides, don't you feel Canada is socialist enough? Why have another item that some people enjoy condemned? What next, food? How many people die as a result of eating fattening food? Are you going to suggest banning pizza, icecre ...[text shortened]... m tobacco; they don't need the gov't telling them that they have to find another way to die...
And also, why on Earth do you Marijuana smokers out there want pot to be decriminalized? You'll all just end up paying more for it! Don't we pay enough tax as it is?
Originally posted by darvlayBecause the gov't spends millions & millions of dollars locking people up (in prison) for simple possesion of marijuana. Don't you think that the money could be spent on better things (like education & health care).

Marijuana is harmless compared to alcohol, cocaine, heroine etc.

Originally posted by dannypitanyYeah I do. But do you know how hard it is to get caught with simple possession??? You have to try and get caught. Those of us petty pot smokers who do it on a leisurely basis and aren't selling it along with whatever on the street corner aren't being sent to jail in this country...

And theft is harmless compared to rape, murder and assault. Is your moral code based on lesser evils ?
Originally posted by darvlayPerhaps I should rephrase it : Instead of "simple possesion", it should read "possesion". Any possesion, whether 1 gram or 10 pounds it makes no difference. Obviously somebody with 10 pounds of pot is trying to sell it, but he is trying to sell it to someone like you "pot smokers who do it on a leisurely basis". And it is not that hard to get caught with pot ... Out here in Quebec it happens all of the time. There is so much of it growing everywhere that the RCMP can choose any farm they want (in a town called Joliette & there are many others just like it) and are sure to find a plantation. But even the cops are fed up with the laws. Not even they want to waste there time with these "petty crimes". Perhaps the "offender" will not be sent to jail, but he will definitely need to go through the court system, and therein lies the problem. IT IS A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.

Howcan you compare "theft" to rape, murder & assault???
In my previous thread, I was comparing things such as alcohol & drugs which are stimulants and act almost in the same way (i.e. altering your mind etc...). These things can be compared ...
But now your comparing theft to rape ??? Where is the logic???
D.
Please note that I do not smoke marijuana, but I do know many people that do. I also know a few who have been convicted & are working there way through the judicial system & believe you me, even the judges are getting fed up 🙄
The attitude of the government has been pretty useless in stemming the use of tobacco. It would far more positive and honest if the government were to say "we acknowledge your right to use the legal substance of tobacco in its many forms. In fact we are indebted to you as you are most certainly going to die sooner thus sparing the government having to pay out thousand upon thousands of dollars in your social security benefits. Thank you for your part in balancing our budget. God bless."

CHRONIC SYMPTOMS OF CANNABIS PSYCHOSIS
Patients are left with the well-recognised and permanent symptoms of memory loss, apathy, loss of motivation and, paranoid ideation. These symptoms known as “ the Amotivational Syndrome” in the past are usually permanent.[5] If Cannabis using resumes then the acute symptoms redevelop. The chronic state can also be arrived at without a preceding psychotic episode. After Cannabis started to be widely used about 20 years ago, for permanent damage to occur it was felt by some that Cannabis had to be heavily used over at least three years [6]. However, there is accumulating evidence that smaller amount will do damage also and in animals “ deficits on tasks dependent on frontal lobe function have been reported in cannabis users” [7]. It is very difficult to conduct research in this area, as it is not acceptable to harm humans by doing trials with damaging substances such as Cannabis. However there is accumulating evidence of the psychological consequences of using Cannabis [8]. It is logical that to get the permanent “ Amotivational Syndrome” small amounts to damage have to accumulate incrementally. All this is in addition to the recognised danger of a recurrence of a pre-existing illness, such as Schizophrenia or Manic-depressive disorder. There are suggestions that Cannabis “ caused schizophrenia in young people and (or) enhanced the symptoms, especially in young people poorly able to cope with stress or in whom the antipsychotic therapy was unsuccessful”. [9] Caspari found “patients with previous cannabis abuse had significantly more rehospitalizations, tended to worse psychosocial functioning, and scored significantly higher on the psychopathological syndromes "thought disturbance" (BPRS) and "hostility" (AMDP). These results confirm the major impact of cannabis abuse on the long-term outcome of schizophrenic patients”.[10]P
