It's amazing how the conflicts we experience as children make their mark on us for life.

It would be hard to full explain from that perspective of being a five year old, but I can understand it.

I had a similiar experience when we sang Christmas songs. I don't know why. I just didn't believe the words. It lasted briefly, then I got over it.

'Son of the bondswoman always persecutes the son of the free'. And this thread

gives evidence to the fact that your imagination is still alive and well. -gb 🙂

Yes, I think many children play along because they don't want to disappoint the adults or destroy the belief of other children, or just because they think it's fun. I don't remember if I ever believed in Saint Nicholas (who brings sweets on 6 December in Germany), but I do remember that I played along for many years. (And my parents played along when one of us children dressed up as Saint Nicholas and brought sweets to them. 😉)

i guess from a historical point of view we used to hunt in packs, one would look out for the other, in numbers we were protected... that could be where this need to fit in stems from

I think the fear of disappointing adults is very strong, definately.

Also a good example of how easy it is to fool little kids.

You could probably substitute Santa for nuclear warheads, killer bees...anything, really.

I was thinking of my childern, they'd play along..well I guess it would depend on a few things but most likely they would. Perhaps in the words that you missed there was a sugestion to do so?

I think everyone has a moment in childhood where they feel on the outside my oldest childern have expressed such a feeling for different reasons that are unique to them and whole hartedly felt by them.
