Team Canada played 4 games with team CCCP (USSR) in 4 cities in Canada. The series then shifted to Moscow for games 5-8. But in between sets, Canada stopped in Stockholm to play Team Sweden in a 3 game tilt. The Soviets were p!ssed because it upstaged the real match, Canada v USSR and team USSR had no one to spar with.
Yes, I remember now and Paul Henderson scored the winning goal for Canada who had that big dramatic coming from behind in games to win the series against Russia. We even learned some things from them in that one as I recall now.

Ice hockey may not seem quite as important today but part of that is more sports going on. Yes this event was very special back in the day.

here's the whole game:: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrHXPSRKByI

And VR, the player that got hurt bad was Wayne Cashman from my Boston Bruins. No wonder why I remembered it so well.
He almost got his tongue ripped out. ...[text shortened]... 1972. the only people interested in this bit of ancient history are old and from depleted ranks lol
Cashman, Esposito, Orr, I believe they were on the team, probably one of Boston's best teams of all time.

I'll take a gander at the link later.

Ya I think it was Henderson. Whoever it was I think of as a center iceman for Maple Leafs. Anyway, yeah, Henderson scored the go-ahead goal with a minute or less to go. Very exciting games.

We got to know who Vladislav Tretiak was all too well. Hall of fame goal tender.
He played in all 4 games in Canada and never played in Russia. Coaches philosophy of playing everyone. The game 8 (final game) goalie was never used until this game, a third stringer. the other goalie that played games 5, 6, 7 was Pushkin, I think.

Anyway, if team USSR stuck with Tretiak in Russia, they would have won. Just my opinion. Team Canada never really solved him. The USSR team went back to Russia 2-1-1, losing only one game in Canada. In fact, Canada did not win until game 4, I think it was in Vancouver. The Montreal game was the real shocker. Canada got blasted.

All in all, a most memorable series.

I remember Team Canada getting booed as people thought they weren't trying as they had the best players in the NHL playing at that time. I remember Phil Esposito's lecture to Canadians for booing them and told the fans they were trying their best. He said these guys are really good, we are going to have to pick up our game a few notches to beat them. Yes it was Paul Henderson who played center for the Maple Leaf's in Toronto. I was very young but still can see him scoring that goal! All of Canada gave a big sigh of relief and knew we got lucky!

Wow, talk about a walk down memory lane. Connie Francis had a great voice.

And we still have the jukebox? I thought the Guinness salesman was going to take it to settle the bill!?!

Anyway, torunn, good to see you
