What drives a person to repeatedly engage in fruitless, uncivilized discourse with no reward other than sheer exhaustion or frustration?

Self-hatred.

Self-hatred.
I feel like some diametrically opposed posters spit vitriol at each other more on a daily basis then they talk to their friends and loved ones. If I had a heart, it would probably ache for them.

It is precisely for the reasons you mentioned that I
am now to be found on private club fora.

In there you do not have to endure the abuse
given out readily and regularly on the fora you
mentioned along with the clan forum also.

I very rarely visit the public fora anymore.

Fora moment I had to reread your response.

Guess I have something to thank them for after all.

Near total subjective preoccupation with themselves with little if any concern for the needs and happiness of others.

Don't like it, don't post there.

I wouldn't exactly call them 'scum of the earth', that sounds at least a little harsh.

Even there, some of us (ahem) get into trouble, eh? 🙂

Like ME. MY happiness. MY needs. NOBODY cares about that!

Precisely, Suzianne. Without strongly held beliefs and loyalties they wouldn't thrive.
"Harsh", for sure. Tone of meaning is 90% of communication; words, per se, 10%.

Suzi, Johnny's point is well taken. Private clubs, by definition, function on good faith in others while exercising the freedom of being yourself. Posturing with ulterior motives and hidden agendas doesn't fit. Immaturity always causes its own grief.

I do; my recent reply to a private club forum question, "An admin title means nothing; the people mean everything to me."
