I get this really awful res level, 640X480 but even worse is it resets to 4 bit color. This happens after my kids go to their myspace account. Weird thing is I have one too and it never does that. What is even worse, the only way to reset the color is to restart the comp. It doesn't respond to the video setting routine. And even worse than that, when I do restart, the booting is screwed up and the desktop comes up but it doesn't finish loading everything then after a while, I get a black screen and nothing seems to happen. So I punch the off button and maybe this time it comes back all the way or maybe I have to do it again. I have tried settings, I even got a new video card, no help. I got several outstanding anti everything suites, like Trend Micro, SUPERantispyware, Registry mechanic, desktop maestro, and the like, even a root kit detector, and the anti stuff actually found a nasty trojan, something like video ax, which actually appeared in the program list, but I was able to ax it! All to no frigging avail. It came back big time after all that crap. Does anyone know anything about this kind of symptom? My son Kevin said to go to internet options and the javascript box, advanced and kill the one that allows resizing, FF and IE have similar things, did that to, big suprise, no avail. So what can be going on? This only happens when they go to either one of two myspace accounts but never happens when I go to my own. WTF? I am starting to think, bad bios? Its a Dell Optiplex, 1.6 Ghz, 1 gig ram, CD burner, Nvideo 7600gs video card, thats about it for the system, hard wired to the router, the other comps are wireless. Don't SEEM to have a virus, at least one that all those progs can find. HELP!

Man, how many more of these type posts will you make?
Save us all (including yourself) the trouble and just throw your computer off a balcony, cancel your broadband and buy some magazines to read, because I don't think you should be allowed to own a computer.

There's another setting deeper in there and if I don't change that, I won't get a permanent setting change. You also need to tick the box that says you don't have to restart the computer to change the setting. I will tell you, though, that I think messing with the display settings often in a short period of time (I don't even remember why now) is what fried my laptop's monitor.

Reinstall/upgrade the drivers for your graphics card.
G force 7600 GS, I got on sale, but the same thing came back.
I also did a root kit detect from Sophos and that came up negative.
I also talked to Dell comp help line, they think I have re install XP.
They also suggested a flash BIOS re-install or upgrade to later version.
The thing that gets me is what could make the video change res at all?
The kicker is how it handles re-boot. Basically it doesn't, the screen goes blank halfway after, especially if you check email.
Its crazy. I think I have to do a BIOS upgrade first just to make sure that is not the problem then go with XP reinstall. That has its own problems though. I have the disk and all but have to suck off all the email for 4 logins.

That might work, at least till the next time they access the bad crap, eh. I wish there was a way to stop that kind of bug?, virus? whatever it is. If thats so, it sure screwed up my comp. I did a good thing, though. Under the concept of forewarned is forearmed, when I set up this comp, I set up two comps, one with more important graphics stuff on it and the one used for networking, tied together with a data switch to share the keyboard, mouse and monitor. That has worked out better than I thought. The other computer is virgin almost, at least for the net. It almost never goes on the internet, only used for family photos and Susan's graphics projects and my music CD's which I store there so I can run off copies. So while this problem is a pain in the butt, that computer I don't really worry too much about having to redo windows. I think before I do that though I will try the Dell site to upgrade the BIOS and see if that makes a difference. Secondary comp that it is, its still a pain in the butt for something like this to happen. One other way would be to hook up a comp just for the kids myspace, then if THAT one gets crapped on, it is no big deal to format the HD and start over. For now though, I still have to deal with this comp if I want to get on the net. Thanks for the help. I tried to contact myspace about this problem but they never answered. I use it myself strictly to find musicians. That is probably the difference between me and the kids, they download video's and photos, like making love without a condom, eh.
You could always set up a new Myspace Account for your kids. See if it helps.
