Aha! Maybe it was all a translation error! In German, a "Pfannkuchen" can be a pancake, but it can also be a Berliner ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berliner_%28pastry%29 ). Berliners are traditionally eaten at carnival (as well as on New Year's Eve).
