As someone who has been here longer than the rec system (and even the current forum system), IMHO there were problems with the prior rec system from the start.
The original purpose of the rec system was to help people find interesting posts and threads amongst all of the garbage. However, it quickly deteriorated into a vehicle for giving out points to participants in pointless name-calling matches, or an incentive for people to post inflammatory statements in an effort to earn "chimp credits" (to borrow an expression from SVW).
If you think that a post would be interesting for others to read then by all means, recommend it. However, if you just want to express your agreement with one side of a debate, just reply and say so.

Don't get me wrong, I'm neither for nor against the rec system. I won' miss it one bit but I don't think it's a great thing that it's gone.
Perhaps stronger emphasis should have been put on reforming behaviour in the forums. ie banning people
But the namby pamby decision has been made to stop the recs. (Something to do with money?)
