Just saw a Sci channel show, very bad one actually, some kind of a sci fi soap. The thing I noticed was the percentage of ads to program time. It was at least 50%. Just wondered if there are legal limits to ads on TV. I think over the years the percentage of program has been steadily going down and ad time going up. But what is to be the limits on this? Are we being programmed to just forget the program and be expectantly waiting for the latest ads to begin? How much will the viewing public put up with before they notice how brainwashed we are all getting?

Only way to change this is for people to pay more money for each channel. 50 bux for 200 channels no where near covers the amount of money it costs to produce shows for all 200 channels. Commercials subsidize the cost of making the show.
You want to get rid of commericials? Be prepared to pay 10 bux per channel!!!
I think it's be worth it though...everyone pays 50 bux a month, we get maybe say 10 channels, but none of them have commercials and everything on it is good content. I'd be up for that over the crap on TV nowawdays.

Its been for a long time40 min. of prog and 20 min of ads but the one I just saw was 30 and 30. It means you can't even have a ten minute shot where you do plot or character build up. It just becomes a series of shorts.
Originally posted by sonhouseWhy should there be limits? If a TV channel wants to do 10 minutes of show and 50 minutes of commercial, let them. They will lose viewership and the commercial time will be worthless. It's all about the free market. Competition between channels will always keep it reasonable. As tivo and other digital recording systems become more and more popular, we may begin to see longer shows with small ads along the sides of the screen during certain points.

Survivor is already a great example of in-show advertising, where they would offer Doritos, Mountain Dew, and a specific brand of car to certain challenge winners.
