Hi all,

We had a long weekend in Paris and spent a while one afternoon watching the chess players in the Jardin De Luxembourg (one of the big parks in Paris).

Here's the pics if you are interested;

A few years ago here in Joubertpark, Johannesburg, South Africa you could play chess with pieces as big as 1meter and the black and white blocks where like 1/2 meter wide. And round the "table" there was like a little stand where people could actually sit down for lunch while watching the oak play - does anyone know if they still have such facilities elsewhere in the world?

Sarajevo. Was there for a week or so last year, and spent one afternoon playing chess with a group of old gents in the main square. Lot of tutting and sucking of teeth at every move!

Not my photo, but...

Also in Caracus, Venezuela, where boards line the streets of the city centre and people play from dawn to dusk.

San Francisco:
Sadly I have no pictures but there was this homeless guy playing six people at once OTB for a dollar a game.
I lost easily and remember being being totally amazed how he could play six games at once.
Obviously this was before I got hooked on RHP.

Last year in the garden part of a DIY store I saw a large plastic chess set (about 3 foot/900mm high) it was quite cheap I think about £60 (not sure though) with black and white paving slabs it would make a great garden feature. As I have just bought a house with a good sized garden I will look out for it. Has anyone else seen these (in the uk) if so what store was it?

Have you played on that one? Every once in a while when I'm in town I play a couple of games. There are some very good players who play often there.

It was just at the end of winter 2003, and was really miserable so there was no one about. 🙁

Next time I'm back, I'll let you know, and we can have a game.
