You stop denying you had nothing to do with the day to day picking, even if you did it in a playful manner. Others did not do it in such a playful manner as you. They were down right mean, rude, ignorant. call it as you will. If I were in your shoes I'd be feeling a little guilt, just because I was involved. Of course that kept you in with the"in crowd" and got you invited to a BBQ.
