I eventually found the solution:
You will need FireFox and the greasemonkey extension for this to work.
If you use the linkification extension, disable it and rather install a greasemonkey script like Linkify Plus: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1352
I can't vouch for this script, but it seems to work fine. There are many other scripts like it out there.
The reason you need to disable Linkification is: it creates tooltips for links it 'linkifies' and this kills the rest of this solution - read further to see why...
Install the TubeLink script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/10684
Go to Manage User Scripts in Greasemonkey and make sure TubeLink is below your linkification script in the scripts pane.
Et Voilà, a tooltip now appears when you hover over YouTube links, including title, duration and number of views.
