Do people buy these phones just because they want to be cool? Is that it? Something to show your friends hoping they think you are cool? Why buy the phone if you aren't going to use the features it was designed for? Just get a regular phone! Doesn't that make sense?? Vanity is a crazy thing i guess...

A recent survey of 15,000 Canadian wireless users by J.D. Power and Associates found 25 per cent of respondents currently own a smartphone, devices that combine voice calling with mobile Web browsing and multimedia functions, and that 65 per cent of those customers indicated they were keen on making a smartphone their next device.

The study comes during a year in which all-in-one devices were in the spotlight with the Canadian release of Apple Inc.'s popular iPhone and Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry Bold, both of which run on high-speed wireless networks.

But the survey also found the majority of respondents didn't foresee themselves subscribing to monthly data plans that permit activities such as Web browsing or downloads, with roughly one-third of respondents citing cost as the main reason.

"Consumers are really fascinated by the functionality and the features of a smartphone, but they're probably not ready to go to the next level given the higher data package cost,"

Do people make random RHP rants because they want to be cool? Is that it? Something you hope your friends might read and think you're cool? Why make a useless post no one will reply to? Just post something interesting! Doesn't that make sense?? Uzless is just crazy I guess...

A recent survey of one Canadian RHP users found that 100% of respondents do not enjoy reading rant posts.

The study comes during the hour in which the Canadians had too much time on their hands and nothing better to do.

But the survey also found the majority of respondents didn't foresee themselves replying in the first place, but jut couldn't help themselves.

Having a calendar/task scheduler on my phone is probably the best part about the phone besides the actual phone calls in my book. web browsing would be nice but is outside my budget; It's a plan issue, not that my cell (free) can't do it.

A guy I work with runs a haunted forest and does a lot of programming work for that. He uses a tethered iphone to look up reference manuals and anything else he may need while out there so I know there are legitimate uses.

I don't deny there are people that actually use the iphone for what it is designed for. My question is with the majority of people, as stated in the article, who buy it and don't use it for what it is designed for.

If you read the whole article, it implies most people buy an iphone just because they think it is cool. I'm asking why do people feel this need to be cool and what makes them think just because they paid 400 bux for a phone, then they are cool too? Isn't this like buying a table saw just to open bags of potato chips??

He is a socialist,ya know and socialists are for redistributing the misery. They don't want anyone to have more or be happier then themselves. It goes hand in hand with the class envy thing.

Its really not kewl and is particularly sad most times.

PS. - No I don't have a Iphone or a Blackberry ...its bad enough I have to carry a simple cell phone for work Most times it rings I let people leave a voice message ... when I don't want to be found.. I don't wanna be found :-)

I have an iPhone and I definitely use all the features.

You make an interesting point though. I know someone else who has an iPhone and uses practically none of the additional features. I have to wonder why they bought it.

I'm totally with you on this.

I change phones when they break, and only buy them for calls and txts.....and a camera for snapping odd things, and sending pics of things to people far away.

I am a-typically anti-cool as far as phones are concearned, and when people can't eat during the economic slump, i'll tell them to eat their phone and fancy TV 😛

Maybe the bottons were okay for size and it fitted in their hand ok (not too heavy that it'll stretch ones pocket, not so light you don't notice when it's fallen out) and liked the style?

That's all that matters really!

I value three things in a phone (by order of importance): battery length, quality of sound and size. The rest I don't care.

What the hell are you talking about? We're talking about iphones and why people buy them.

Stay on target.

BB Storm for me, a few days old and still getting used to it. As for the debate, who cares, it was my personal preference in phones

Your last sentence hits the hammer on the head. People are always complaining taxes are too high, yet some of those same people (some people i know too) go out and blow 400 bux on a phone they don't need just for the "cool" factor. I know people who's old cell phone was working perfectly but bought the iphone just because "i gotta have it". Crazy. This is borderline envy affliction.

As for the "it makes you happy" idea, I'll never understand how what amounts to a $400 telephone book and email machine can make you happy, but I digress.
