If someone threatened to sue Russ and then followed through on the threat, one of three things could happen. The judge might toss out the case, Russ would most likely prevail if the case wasn't tossed out, or Russ could save himself the headache of dealing with a lawsuit by dropping all of the public message boards.

The situation there (at that other site) was no different than it is here.

That's incorrect. The situation at that other site, and what caused the brouhaha that led to the removal of the forums at that other site was far different and was directly caused by those who ran that site.

If, according to you, the situation at that other site was "no different than it is here" and it got shut down because of threats of law suits, can you give some examples of recent posts on this forum that you think leave this site open to such legal action.

Over not properly monitoring the boards. I'm not saying that is what's happening here. I'm talking about a situation where someone was threating to sue based on what other people were saying to them at the message boards.

And I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect the person(s) making this threat were among the trouble makers at those message boards. So it may have been an empty threat, or maybe it wasn't. Website owners have been taken to court over issues like this, so it was a threat the owner took seriously... he had been getting complaints about abusive behavior for a long time, and he had enough of it.

Did you read his message about what he going to do and why he decided to drop the boards?

Who here do you think might be justified in threatening to sue the web site based on what other people were saying to them on this forum?

Surely such a nuisance law suit could be attempted here (or anywhere for that matter) regardless of what was actually going on on this forum?

To sue, one must allege there has been some actual physical, financial or emotional damage or harm. Who might sue here at RHP and over what "damage"?

Well shoot, any narcissist here might feel justified. At that other site a posters messages could not be seen (literally) by you if you chose to click on 'ignore' in their profile. LoL

But if anyone could, in your view, launch a nuisance law suit at any time, including here at this web site, what does that have to do with the specific question that has been raised about the atmosphere on this forum?

If the posters at that other site had the facility to block the posts and posters they read and could conduct this monitoring and moderation themselves, how could they possibly sue the proprietor "over not properly monitoring the boards"?

Good question. It's a feature I didn't have a problem using if I got fed up with someone. Some of us (including yours truly) were always advising people to use the feature if they didn't like what they saw, but many of them insisted it was their right to know what anyone was saying... I was willing to rescind that right, but apparenty they weren't.
