A friend of mine seems to have just done an update of sorts and now his computer won't get past the log screen. Seems his hourglass turns about once and he's frozen.
At first I told him he should check all ribbon and any drive connections, but also asked if he recently did an update.
The question is:
How do you get the computer to go the the screen that asks if you want to go back to your last successful settings to boot up, or boot in safe mode, etc.
Any better advice as what to try and do? Any thoughts?
Any help for my pal? He'd ask, but as you may know he's got no computer right now and the guy that helped him build the computer is not around.

If you're like me and like to tweak, I'm sure you've killed WindowsXP a few times already. If you're been playing around with drivers and services and can't boot into Safe mode, never fear! What you'll need to do is load up the Windows Recovery console, put your WindowsXP CD into the optical drive and boot off it. Once you get to the main menu press the "R" key, from there allow the 5 second timer to countdown then select the operating system you want to work on (there's only one option if you've only installed one OS). You'll be prompted for the "Administrator password", enter that and you're in.
A quasi DOS prompt will appear, but many conventional DOS commands do not work here. From here type "listsvc" and press the enter key. Scroll through the list and find the driver, service or switch that you believe killed the boot process of your OS. After you find all of them, press the "ESC" key to get back to the prompt. From here then type "disable ?????", substitute ????? for whatever driver or service that you want to stop from loading up. Once you disable enough, that should allow you to at least boot back into Safe mode which is more powerful. If you happen to turn the wrong switch off by accident don't worry once you boot back up, you can re-enable the options.

Sounds great. On a few occasions though, when I've attempted to enter the recovery console, I've asked the person whose pc it is, "What's your admin password?".
"I don't know" they reply.
Now what do we do? 🙁
If they can get into safe mode, system restore might fix the problem.

you can just enter through after inserting the windows xp disc and not bother with recovery console, accept the licence agreement, xp will then search for previous versions and give you the option to repair, press r to repair and the cab files in the local user registry setting will be rewritten; works everytime for me
