Please help.

I'm new to Winxp after years of sticking it out with win98.

The one thing that frustrates the crap out of me is the cd-autplay feature. I hate the fact that everytime I put a cd in the drive it automatically loads. It was easy to turn this off with 98, how do you do it with XP?

Hi, haven't tried this but it looks right

This could be the answer to my wife's continued playing of Robbie Williams CDs

If you go to the start menu, choose 'run' and type 'msconfig' then press enter you will get an interface which allows you to choose which programs load on startup. Click on the 'startup' or 'services' tab and deselect the one which autoplays etc. I'm afraid I can't remember what it is called, but a quick google search should tell you.

Hope this helps 🙂

In windows exporer, right click the CD drive (left hand panel), go to properties. You will see a window pop up with AutoPlay as a tab. Go there and fiddle with the settings (can't remember how)

as above posts

select properties on drive
choose autoplay tab
use the dropdown box to select music cd
either select your prefered action, or ensure the radio button for prompt each time is checked.

good luck

This is not the way to turn off autostart.

This one gets my rec.

for clarity, if any:

Right-click on the drive icon for your CD drive, CD recorder, or DVD drive, and select Properties.

Choose the AutoPlay tab, and choose the desired action for each type of CD. For example, choose Music CD, then click Select an action to perform, then select Take no action.

It's clear from the variety of "solutions" that few people in this thread are any more familiar with XP than HotCrotch.

If you come to belittle, why not provide us with a solution via your great wisdom sir?

Bowman again, with another useless post.

Here's something that will make turning off autoplay easier. It's a registry file. Just open it and it will disable autostart on your WinXP machine without you having to go into the settings of each drive and each type of media.

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/Disable_CD_Autorun.reg

to turn it back on:

Sorry for going off on a tangent, but does Win2K have it's own version off msconfig? I've tried to run it but it's not entertaining me.

Win2000 doesn't have the msconfig program, nor to my knowledge a similar program like it. Also, when using Win2k, you have to give yourself administrator rights before making changes in the system. 🙁
