Writing Children's Books a step back?

I have a cross dressing friend who really wants to be an author. (S)He had real trouble getting his fiction/drama books published.

He has had offers from the people who read his books to do children's books, as they think he'd be more suitable to writing those. He feels that "only the most desperate of the desperate" will stoop to those levels, writing 5 page books instead of the drama which they live for. He's a big guy, so I told him that a guy/gal needs to eat.

I've recommended to him to spend 12 hours for 7 days in the literary arena that is RHP General, especially concentrating on The Word Association Game thread. Are there any unpublished adult authors who have been forced to write children's books to satiate their girthy belly, buy hair products, and pay for the final stage of the procedure? My friend needs advice quick.

My advice to any author is to go with what you know. Go over old family albums and try drum up some memores of childhood, trying on mom's dresses, playing with barbie, that sort of stuff. Channel that childish imagination. It would also be a good idea to spend some time hanging out with some kids to see what they're into. What age group is he going for? 5 year olds are totally different to 8 year olds.

Children's books are much harder to write than any grown-up drivel you can think of. These days a children's book has to be of pedagogical significance, it has to demonstrate (if not impose) certain values that society holds dear (not lying or treating others bad for instance). But that's the easy part. Try writing something like that and make it exciting enough for actual kids, while at the same time getting the approval of parents (each with their own ideas about what's good and not for their children).

No, writing children's books (if you're serious about it) is hell I'm sure, and a challenge as hard as any. I wouldn't venture into that abyss for anything. Brrrrrr... 😕

Hmm, ... I see that a couple of the PFC are into the teletubbies!
Since this is a thread about children books, I'll give you the lyrics of the Teletubbies theme.

Over the hills and far away,
Teletubbies come to play ....
Time for teletubbies,
time for teletubbies,
time for teletubbies....
Tinkywinky. - "Tinkywinky!"
Dipsy. - "Dipsy!"
Laalaa. - "Laalaa!"
Po. "Po!"
Teletubbies. - "Teletubbies!"
Say, Heeeeee-lo! - "Eh-oh!"
Tinkywinky. Dipsy. Laalaa. Po.
Teletubbies. - "Teletubbies!"
Say Heeeeeee ......... "Uh-oh!"
"Where have the teletubbies gone ?
Where have the teletubbies gone?"

Eh-oh! 😵

btw who of you guys/girls is Tinkywinky, Dipsy, Laalaa and Po?

I've heard that in many ways childrens books can be a lot more difficult to write. Relating to children is tough. Back when I was working in sales, I met a woman who called herself a professional writer, and made a living by writing greeting cards whilst she worked on her first novel. Perhaps you should mention this to your friend.

The key to success, in anything you do, is to never display juvenile temper tantrums when your creations fail. Just pick up, accept contructive criticism, and try harder next time.

Stocken is right on.

Why not write short stories?? Even *I* have had those published!! I didn't read through the entire thread. Did anyone mention Dr. Seuss yet? Writing for children wasn't exactly his Plan A.

Yeah, I thought so too. How incredibly embarrassing to find out it's not. 😳 I actually thought they all loved me. Oh, Bob! I just want to die now. :'(😳
