Welcome to the 17th round of the RHP Photography Competition, "Advanced Editing"! View the pictures here:
http://www.katja.klee24.de/TFC/Advanced/Advanced.html

I was a bit in doubt whether the number of pictures you can vote for should be a bit smaller than usual this time, as we have only 14 entries. But I'll leave it to the voters - you can vote for eight pictures if you wish, but as always it's also possible to vote for fewer pictures.

You can use this table and insert the number and title of the photos:
1st - 10 pts -
2nd - 8 pts -
3rd - 6 pts -
4th - 5 pts -
5th - 4 pts -
6th - 3 pts -
7th - 2 pts -
8th - 1 pt -

If you vote for fewer than eight pictures, you can choose yourself which ranks you want to give them (e.g. 1st, 2nd, 5th and 8th).

Here is the list of photos for copying and pasting into the table above:

1. Abandoned
2. Sleep Tight
3. Little Boy Racer
4. Butterfly Kisses
5. Fallout
6. The Egyptian Lamp
7. The Surprise
8. The Payoff
9. Holy Cow, Zebra Crossing
10. Lake in Winter
11. Lemon
12. The Origin of Symmetry
13. Out of Place
14. Catgirl

There is no non-voting section this time because nobody sent me entries for it, but it can still be created if you have pictures you want me to put there.

Please don't vote for your own entries. Voting is obligatory for everybody who has entered this round, and it would be much appreciated if everybody who plans to enter future rounds would vote in this round as well. And of course any other votes are very welcome, too!

Comments and discussions are not only allowed, but encouraged right from the start. I would like everybody to say something about their favourite picture. Feel free to comment on other pictures as well. The names of the photographers will not be revealed until the voting is over.

Voting will close on Thursday, 2nd November, 20 UT. The discussion can and should be continued after that, of course. This round will be followed by:

18. Blue/Red/Yellow (people enter one picture per colour; voting is for each colour and an overall winner)
19. Movement/Motion

Further rounds will hopefully be decided on by vote some day.

If you have questions, complaints or ideas, send me a PM. You can also contact me at rhpphotocomp@gmail.com

Enjoy!

An interesting bunch of photos. For me, some ideas worked well, and others not so well.

1st - 10 pts - 3. Little Boy Racer, great mock up, interesting textures, demands attention.
2nd - 8 pts - 2. Sleep Tight, simple but very effective.
3rd - 6 pts - 1. Abandoned, very good composition, but the blending in of the skull could have been better.
4th - 5 pts - 11. Lemon, clean, startling.
5th - 4 pts - 12. The Origin of Symmetry, very effective image manipulation.
6th - 3 pts - 13. Out of Place, made me smile.
7th - 2 pts - 9. Holy Cow, Zebra Crossing, really interesting, but the sum of the parts are greater than the whole.
8th - 1 pt - 4. Butterfly Kisses, cutesy but nice.

Well done to all!

No, it actually wasn't: Thread 30359
But I was a bit disappointed, too. I had hoped that at least those who have asked for this round would enter.

Well, I wasn't sure how to approach voting for this round. The shots I prefer photographically may not be the same as those that I prefer editingly (made up word). I decided that I'd go for editing skills though seeing as how this is the title of the round.

I also thought I'd write my usual novel in case anybody is interested.

1) Abandoned

Interesting shot with a lot of atmosphere. The connection between the skull and the discarded cars, to me, drifts between making sense and not making sense so I'm not too sure what to make of it. However, the image does have a fascination for me and I rather like it.

2) Sleep tight:

From a photographic point of view, I'm a bit distracted by the subject's left arm which could be more in shot or perhaps less in shot but currently looks a little off to me. Also, I'm not sure if the hair beads by the mouth are ideally located. However, it is still a rather nice shot with good eye contact and nice tones. The hair style works rather well for me too. The editing doesn't do too much for me I'm afraid because I can't help thinking the shot is good enough on its own and doesn't need the selective colouring. Maybe if it were just the eyes.

3) Little Boy Racer:

For me this is great work. The concept is really good and I can see a lot of work has gone into this. I like the touch of the speed camera and I like how the shot is mounted on a wooden background with the burning match. I feel I ought to complain about something so I'll complain about the translucent match flame as it looks a little unreal to me.

4) Butterfly Kisses

A bit too cutsie for me but rather good anyway. The selective colouring works well in this one though I might have held off on the rouge. I do feel it needs a little more work on the select/smudge/blur as the outline of the child does suffer in places. I'm not sure if layers were used as well as they might have been. Nice work though all in all.

5) Fallout

I rather like this one. I like the colour and the work that has been applied to the sky. It has a very good feel to it in my view.

6) The Egyptian Lamp

Very nice work on this one too though a scantlly clad honey is always likely to raise the profile of a shot somewhat. Trying to avoid that obvious attraction I like the work done here. The lamps, the plate and the background are all nicely done in my view. Perhaps I'd like the actual inside of the lamp a little darker too but I'm probably just being picky.

7) The Surprise & 8) The Payoff

Not so keen on these ones though don't really know why. Maybe it's just that I don't like Budweiser.

9) Holy Cow, Zebra Crossing

This is a class piece of work in my view. The subdued contrast, the tones and the graphic work are all excellent. I really like the image itself appearing on the front page of the newspaper. I think, for this alone, the shot deserves first place.

10) Lake in Winter

Lovely shot and nice work. It really does look like it might be artwork in pastel. Excellent work.

11) Lemon

I like this very much but more as a photograph than an example of editing. I think the shot is striking and imaginative but probably could have been done with less effort without using any editing aside of a hue change. Nice work though, I like it.

12) The Origin of Symmetry

I really like this shot too. A really fascinating image that keeps you occupied for a while when looking at it. I'm not sure how "advanced" the "editing" is which loses it a couple of points given the round we are in but I would emphasize that I think it's a very strong image in and of itself.

13) Out of place.

This one is funny and rather clever too in an unusual kind of way. I like the idea of clouds making their way across the sky on chair lifts.

14) Catgirl

Given this is a first attempt at image manipulation I'm rather impressed. I like that the selection around the hair is not perfect and I think the teeth, particularly, work very well. Background is good too.

OK, on to my vote. Tough one to vote on but here's my effort. Well done to all though.

1st - 10 pts - Holy Cow, Zebra Crossing
2nd - 8 pts - Little Boy Racer
3rd - 6 pts - The Egyptian Lamp
4th - 5 pts - Lake in Winter
5th - 4 pts - Out of Place

1st - 10 pts - 3. Little Boy Racer - Excellent editing. Impressive from the first glance and keeps on surprising afterwards.
2nd - 8 pts - 10. Lake in Winter - I love this one, I'm almost positively fooled into believing that's a painting.
3rd - 6 pts - 11. Lemon - Great contrasts, even if I don't get it if there's a message.
4th - 5 pts - 4. Butterfly Kisses - Cute. Very cute. Too cute to not put it higher.
5th - 4 pts - 1. Abandoned - I like the idea of the comparision and the editing is good, but I think that it doesn't work as a picture. At least for me.
6th - 3 pts - 9. Holy Cow, Zebra Crossing - I think that little boy racer is a much better construction that this one. It all seems a bit over the top but it lacks a certain internal coherence. All added things should have all a reason why they're there and it turns excessive when some are relatively meaningless like the bottle or the bird (or I just don't get it why they're there). Shame as the work put into it is great technically.
7th - 2 pts - 2. Sleep Tight - Simple but effective.
8th - 1 pt - 5. Fallout - Gets a point for being apocalyptic 🙂
