I was just wondering, I had heard before that people actually play better when they've drank a little bit. However, I notice its similar with Marijuana too, if you've had very very little. B then, if I have too much I've had problems. I was wondering if anybody else has smoked and tried to play chess, and if they can actually do it? I wasn't having any big problems untill I started forgetting what my plans were in a position....Forcing me to rediscover what I was doing...

Any other forgetful smokers around here?

I doubt all of this. Alcohol and weed don't mix with chess as far as I'm concerned.

Oh i agree, alcohol is a no no. It's all about that big phat bottomless cup of coffee, or some killer tea for me.

Some of my best OTB games have been played in easy hangover after few liters of beer in previous day 😀 My game against Vladimir Sveshnikov for example - http://www.clausjensen.com/?p=110

At least in my experience, the few times I've had a little alcohol before chess, it seems to have hurt my games a little. (My game's already bad enough, I don't have to be makng it worse.) Of course, I'm not suggesting that my experience is the same as everyone else.

As far as marijuana or cigarettes, I have no experience with that. My only interest in the marijuana/chess combo issue is for people who would need to take it for medical reasons to ease pain. It would be interesting to hear someone's opinion for that scenario.

Also I would add that GM Ratmir Kholmov (according to his own words) had real hangover when he won Fischer in this well known game 😀

Just because there have been good games when on drugs doesn't prove that anyone was helped by them. However, it's possible that if you think they improve your chess, you will play better due to the placebo effect.

well i can't imagine "drugs" helping you... but i was talking about marijuana and alcohol, which i don't think have a negative affect as long as they're not abused to the point that you don't know what your doing.

i think that the affect marijuana has on your mind, and forces you to focus on a single event for long periods of time, helps you to concentrate on your plan and what your doing in a game of chess.

some coffee is good for concentration, a lot of it disrupts concentration heavily. the same applies to many other drugs.

also the brain chemistry works in quite unintuitive ways. some people react to amphetamines by calming down and concentrating better for example.

personally, a few beers gives me higher rating on CTS and blitz. a lot of them and I lose points. never tried playing on pot, but I'd imagine it has a calming effect which would make concentrating easier. especially for nervous people.

Both Marijuana and Alcohol are drugs with a widespread effect on brain function. They're specifically what I was referring to.

Stimulants may help in chess if you're not at peak concentration. However, I don't think they'll allow you to play better than your capacity - only to play at that level for a longer period of time in some cases. For example, if I get 5 hours of sleep, I will be tired and can only sustain maximum concentration for a short period. Even then, it is not as effective as normal. A coffee might bring me back to 85% (Did you know 99% of statistics are made up?).
