I hung a piece to a 1400 player earlier this week, and just found out today. I was overdue, so hopefully I settled the account.

    I doubt it, though.

On the same theme 'daft things we do.'

Today I was reading on the ECF forum about a lad at a quick play event.
He was White in a position very similiar to this. (the exact position is not given)

    [fen]8/2P5/5K2/8/5k2/8/8/8[/fen]
White to move with the flags hovering.
Now even if Wh ...[text shortened]... llegal move stands. White lost.

I've been chuckling to myself all day about that one.
Yeah, some of the blitz rules are not as entertaining in the US. WBCA has you forfeit the game if you make an illegal move. Same result, but not as fun to watch. 😛

    Hi SG.

It is roughly the same in the UK. Any illegal moves losses
but it has to be noticed right away.

Does the rule about if the illegal move was not noticed and other moves
were played then the illegal moves stands apply in the US.

A blitz trick (I've seen it done.) Is in positions like this.

White plays 1.Ra6 and says ''Check.'

    Black quickly plays 1...Kh6.

White takes the Black King 1-0.

You won't win any friends (unless you are amongst friends - we use to try
it against each other in blitz games at Bells. It was all part of the fun.)

Moving a pawn from the 4th rank to the 6th rank is also a blitz trick
but that is serious cheating, even amongst friends.
None of the lads I played with would ever try such a thing.

There was a thread recently about are blitz games good for your chess.
The main plus is that it will show you just how long 5 minutes can be
(it is really 10 minutes for a start) and toughens you up for severe time trouble.

That lad who picked up the wrong colour of Queen sounds like he was
not very experienced at blitz. I cannot see an experienced blitzer doing this.

    But you never know.
There are caes of IM's taking their own pieces during a 'normal' game.

One of the cheesiest such 'tricks' I have heard of is this:

(Pretend there are some other pieces on the board somewhere)

White to move plays 1.Kc5. This is so unexpected that Black moves some other piece besides the K and white 'wins' with 2.KxK! [Obviously this works best with Black down to his final seconds]

We actually had a tournament director warn us that if we tried the KxK trick, we would be forfeited and not the opponent, even if he didn't notice. 😛
