Some amazing games in this thread.
The subtleties of positional play can be fun while playing, but lost on an a less attentive audience. Chess played at its best often appears quite baffling until carefully analysed.
But I don't think you need strong players to make the choices here. A "best game" should really be distinguishable from the majority of games played by having some outstanding feature(s) that every chess player can recognise and enjoy. A brilliancy, audacity, a surprise development, blood and guts, a shock turn of events, a single move that swings the balance of power... the kind of things that only happen every 50 or 100 games but leave you excited about playing chess.
If you can arrive at a shortlist, I'm sure Russ would organise a community vote.
Here are some of the games that I've played that spring to mind, and that might be considered:
I'm particularly proud of this one because (a) it was in the 2006 Championship final round (b) I was playing Black and (c) judging by White's play he was completely unaware of the danger until it was all too late. Game 2548749
I always get a buzz out of playing the Danish Gambit, particularly when it "shocks and awes". Here cludi rightly trades back the material, but ultimately cannot repel waves of White aggression. Game 2983502
Another Danish Gambit. Extremely violent (Parental guidance is advised.) Black builds a significant material advantage but cannot put it to good use; his pieces are cramped in the corner while White controls the centre. SeinfeldFan91 said after the game: "I can't believe that I lost that game! What did I do wrong!?" Game 3582470
A more sedate game that by move 43 appears to be heading for a tame draw. Then White snoozes and unwittingly hands Black a tempo that ultimately loses the game. Game 3639496
Originally posted by Policestatewell, I've posted this game I played against itsyouthatiadore many times, and still think it's the best I've played so far. it doesn't really compare to vipiu's gem (which gets my vote so far - what's not to like in a reckless attacking saccing spree which ultimately even works out?), but...
I guess the vipiu game instigated this post.
I have to say, that if anyone has ever matched a mate in 11, commencing with a rook sacrifice (in the true sense of the word), followed by a queen sacrifice, followed by a knight sacrifice, culminating in mate for the white king on the 8th rank(!) in a cross fire of bishops, finished off by a discovered chec ...[text shortened]... t on me, but I still think that the best games should have all levels of player coo-ing in awe.
Game 2454752
Originally posted by wormwoodPretty nice too. Was all of that sound though?

Originally posted by adam warlockwell, as I remember, fritz never went much lower than equality, not even when I did the second positional sac... I don't check that deep with engines though, as I doubt an error 20 plies deep on an unforced line will teach me anything...

Originally posted by wormwoodOk. It was a fun game but I had to ask you.

Originally posted by PolicestateNot to mention that the mate come from a rook that never moved, even in delivering the mate! (Although, I think I would have preferred moving the bishop 1st and mating with a king move.)

I was wondering if the sac would have been good had white played 21 Ng3 (or other N move) or 25 Kh4?
Anyway, a beautiful combo! It makes me wonder how often in an ordinary game there lurks a brillant play that is never noticed by us ordinary players???
[Event "RHP Blitz rated"]

1. e2-e4 e7-e5 2. Ng1-f3 Nb8-c6 3. Bf1-b5 Qd8-f6 4. d2-d3 a7-a6 5. Bb5xc6 Qf6xc6 6. Nf3xe5 Qc6-c5 7. d3-d4 Qc5-b5 8. a2-a3 d7-d6 9. Nb1-c3 Qb5-b6 10. Nc3-d5 1-0
This was a game i had in the Blitz Section of RHP although I know this is for slower games this was a 10 minute 0 inc. game and it seemed that my knights just came together and because the moves black made against me my knights came together to take over the left side of the entire board so I'm very proud of this game although its very short, this game shows how important controlling the center can be, to the success of any match.
