Is it worth doing it this way? Mostly I just grab a board and read through the books and play the game out. Not much thinking but you get through a ton of books quickly.
I'd be up for another. I've always heard that this type of solitaire chess is a great way to study, but never made time for it. Doing it this way makes it fun.

I thought Solitare Chess was like Guess a move. Are there comments in Solitare Chess?

I thought it was like a multiple choice thing and either you are right or wrong but no comments are given as to why the select move was chosen or comments about the game and possible variations.

I used to get Chess Life years ago, and if I remember correctly, Bruce Pandolfini wrote a monthly solitaire chess article where you would guess the moves, then check your moves and anaysis against his at the end. I've also heard of studying annotated Master games this way, like you did with this thread. Whatever you call it, it is a fun exercise.

Neat I should look into books like that then. Might be funner to read and guess.

Sorry i took so long to reply. I think that this exercise has lead to a completely new way of analysing all the games i have collected over the years from newspaper clippings. I would appreciate it if we could do this again and i really appreciate all the effort you put into this. I think we all do.

I was only able to dip in for a couple of moves but it's been really useful and I'm planning to spend some more time studying the thread. Thank - you for all the effort you've put into it.

Wow, looks like a success so far. I haven't had time to compare my comments with the actual ones. I'll probably do that over the weekend.

Can you guys see yourself reading a masters book with his annotated games this way though? Around 4-6 hours each game if you do it this way.

I posted yesterday but it seems to have dissappeared...anyway my comment was that even though I was only able to participate for a couple of moves I found it really instructive and I plan to spend some time looking through the whole thread. And thank - you also for the considerable time you've put into this exercise and I'm hoping you're up for doing it again.

Edit:Now that's spooky - my previous post has reappeared...no harm in saying thanks twice😵

Well I don't think I'll be looking at my own analysis anytime soon. I started playing Age of Empires 2 and it's very addictive.

So I will dig up this thread and post my comments when I looked at my own analysis.

Any now for Stives reward for winning. Any guesses?

Well I went over the actual game and compared my comments with the annotated comments.

I missed some simple moves and had a few different ideas on how to proceed as white which weren't as straight forward as Capa. Of course that is understandable as we are not on the same level but the simple mistakes, 3 at least could have been avoided had I tooken this seriously and pretend it was my own game. First time I'm playing guess the move. When you don't have anything to lose you don't try that hard. One of the problems with blitz, you lose so what? You just wasted a few minutes. You lose an OTB game and you wasted a few hours.

I spent a total of 157 minutes guessing the moves. This is a bit to long. It should have been close to 120 minutes.

I found this a good method to truly understand a game and get the most out of reading a chess book. I learnt a bit about positional play from this game and how to convert a slight advantage into a crush victory step by step.

I will post the annotated game on my blog along with me comments. I'm not sure if the color coding will work on the blog but I have entered comments below my own after going over the game about why I missed a move or what was important in the position.
My blog address is on my profile page.
