Magnus Carlsen said yesterday that he will NOT be playing in the next World Championship.

So it's Ding vs Nepo.

I'm rooting for Ding.

Hi Beowulf,

It does not matter who wins. If Carlsen stays active they will always be
considered pretenders to the thrown. It's a pity but there it is.

@greenpawn34

True but the show must go on.

Morphy quit.
Alekhine died.
Fischer ran away from Karpov.
Kasparov boycotted FIDE
Magnus is a wimp...

...but the show must go on. 😉

Dammit Magnus... such a lame excuse too:

"Meh, can't be bothered lol"

How many millions is that he's just thrown down the toilet!?

I think it's...
Almost 2 million and he basically gave Ding Liren a guarantee of 800 thousand if he loses.
Liren's biggest pay day was a gift from Magnus the quitter 😄

That is if FIDE can find a sponsor to put in the same amount of money
they'd expect to get if Carlsen was playing.
This will be the world final nobody wants to be part of.
The prize will be a few quid and weekend at Alton Towers.

Yes. Maybe be a chess champion is kind of difficult.

ah yes...

I did not think of that.
I just assumed.

I'm sure some pro Russian people will donate to promote Nepo.
Chess is politics after all 🤔
Good lord, even China will promote it too because of Ding Liren and I'm betting this generates a lot of money.

I don't think the chess is hard for them.

I think it's an ego thing mixed with borderline crazy guy syndrome.

We have all seen horrendous blunders by the best players.
They are not God's.

They have to win the World Championship and then die to become God's.

Tell me that isn't a bad ass introduction to a chess book?

All the World Champions and their idiosyncrasies?

I'll take 20 percent of the profit...send me a cheque I trust you 😉

Maybe he's just fed up with the whole thing and wants to retire on a high.
It must be stressful preparing for tournaments, travelling etc.
If the money doesn't matter to him then why not give it all up?
He could probably make a fortune on the lecture circuit(if there is one)without all the stress.
How much would St Louis chess club for example pay him for a simultaneous display or something ?

Right..Magnus is a complete jerk. all he has to do is play a few games and he gets a million $, 😀 ..like does he really think his $8 million net worth will last the rest of his life? He's only 31 now...
