"On March 2, Levy Rozman, in a pink sweater and round glasses, was
streaming his Chess.com matches to 12,000 viewers over Twitch.
“All right, this looks like a c****er,” he said without pause, as he
clicked on the pigeon icon of his opponent, Dewa_Kipas.
Rozman, an international chess master, scrolled through the profile,
disbelieving. His opponent had climbed nearly a thousand points
in the span of a month, ranking 2,300 to Rozman’s 2,431. And his profile
didn’t include the sort of title—“FIDE master,” “national master”—
that the ranking implied. In fact, Rozman would later discover,
Dewa_Kipas, or “fan god,” was a bird-feed seller in Indonesia."
"Ali Akbar, a 24-year-old whose Facebook banner is a sprawl of pink-haired
shoujo manga, had written a post about Rozman from his home in
Bandung, Indonesia, to his 3,500 followers. According to Akbar,
Dewa_Kipas was a 60-year-old retired tournament player named
Dadang Subur who had only recently become addicted to Chess.com.
Also, he wrote, Subur was his dad. And he most certainly did beat chess master Rozman."
"Akbar recorded a 20-minute video with his father in which Subur claims
he beat Shredder, a commercial chess engine, on a grandmaster-level
setting four times in a row. They buckled down."
Dadang Subur apparently boasted that he's about an IM in strength.
His boast was absurdly wrong, as further evidence confirmed.

@duchess64 saidIn my opinion: yes. The prestige to be a top rated player on a chess website might seem trivial, but for some it is more recognition than they can get elsewhere.

Regarding cheats here. No money or anything else involved so why do they bother..
These days I only play in the low rated hardcore events, good clean fun all round.
I played above my grade in one and got hammered, Tournament 36646 but it was me going
sac happy No silicon apparent, just a bunch of good players who took my pieces and defended well.
I know from the blog (just look at the games I select) that computer assistance is very low.
However do look out for people offering lessons based on their high RHP rating.
Get the real name from them before you part with any money.
I knew that there's no real Englishwoman of her age who could play like that unassisted - no you didn't. You're making an assumption.If a reasonably good player spends several hours,days or even weeks looking at a position could he/she not come up with the best move after intensive study?
If it was a blitz game that is different
I had no reason to believe that she was lying about her identity (why not pretend
to be a much younger woman or man?), so she was lying about not using an engine.
That statement is not logical.It's akin to saying all the players I have beaten had glasses,whereas all the games I have lost were against people with brown hair so all good chess players must have brown hair.

Anyone is allowed to study books,or even games published on the internet and make move decisions based on that.That is not cheating.
