In the very strict sense and correct meaning of the word 'sport' chess does not actually fit atal comfortably into this category, as an actual 'sport 'requires that physical exertion should be the main component of the activity in question. However'sporting' or' good' manners apply equally well to chess as in any boardgame or sporting activity.------------😉

That's not true. Chess is in the IOC list of recognised sports: http://www.olympic.org/uk/sports/recognized/index_uk.asp
EDIT: and as far as the topic at hand goes:
yes, some people do sweat
Scientifically, most of the calories we use are used in the chemicals processes that constitute the construction of ideas. So, if we were to put this activity into overdrive, it would burn substantially more calories.
For this reason, exhaustion does come into play: you burn calories, you get hungry, you get tired which in turn forces you to deal with the PHYSICAL pains....
On a personal level: yes when games have gotten more exciting adrenalin has kicked in. I start sweating, legs start twitching, hand starts shaking....these are all PHYSICAL actions...
what you seem to miss is that what happens in the brain (the mind stuff) while disctinct from the body, does influence, control and determine how it feels.
In reality without looking at the more abstract and less significant considerations the original poster of thread is basically correct, with a few less important matters to be considered chess has only in the more modern period come to be known by a minority of players and non-players alike as more akin to a sport than a boardgame. This has come about largely because of a desire among these minorities to elevate what is essentially a 'boardgame' to something above or beyond a mere'game',in the mistaken belief that a game is not worthy of the same respect as a bona fide sporting activity. It is in reality of little importance whether players choose to call it a sport a game or a combination of both, however a game of checkers[draughts] played on the same board is far more seldom referred to as a sport, and yet played correctly requires a similar degree of physical excersion as does chess. Neither chess nor checkers are strictly speaking a sporting activity, but they are not without similarities in certain physical aspects, hence the reason that a minorty feel atleast partly justified in their reasoning that chess is a true sport or sporting activity.---------------😉
Chess is not a sport it's a game of skill.
In the same token, baseball and bowling, etc are also not sports, they're just games. Fishing is neither a game nor a sport, it's hunting for survival.
If ballroom dancing and synchronized swimming can be an Olympic event then why can't chess or spinning in a chair ?
Sport can be broken down into other categories though: athletic, intellectual..
Chess would fall in the latter category wouldn't it?
BTW, there have been about 3-4 discussions of this in the past. The most recent was 4 months ago.
