Well, I was THIS close to giving up on you guys, but now I must reappear to clarify a few things. In response to various posts I have come across here that refer to good or bad SPORTSMANSHIP or even refering to chess in the same breath as the OLYMPICS, I must declare that in no way, shape, or form, can chess, even in the LOOSEST sense (not even .0000001 percent) be called a sport. It is NOT even considered by the IOC (International Olympic Committee).

According to the online version of OXFORD (the undisputed authority on the english language), a sport is defined as: "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others."

http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/sport

Just to get another take, here is what dictionary.com said: "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc."

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sport

Physical exertion. Athletic activity. Chess uses NEITHER.....EVER!!!

Infact, one can be a quadrapalegic and still be a grandmaster. You don't even have to be able to move the pieces, a proxy can do it for you.

So, I DEMAND that no one say that chess is sportlike or use the term unSPORTsman-like, etc. GAMESMANSHIP is the appropriate word from here on out..

There is NO need to respond to this post. Nothing would please me MORE than if you all just read it and accepted it and didn't respond. Enough with the flaming. Trolls not welcome.

There can be NO debate about this subject. It is cut and dried. It is FACT. It is the TRUTH. Thank you for your time.

Wow you honestly are the most ignorant man alive. No physical exertion? So your saying you have never felt physical fatigue in a match? Haven't your legs grown tired? Your hands shaky? The mind is part of the body!

I agree, but there are alot of things that get classified as a sport that really aren't sports. Race car driving comes to mind.

Btw,

If this is the best you can come up with, I think your days are about up. It's time to move on to another board to recycle your earlier threads.

hey JMAN566, Mind and Body are two SEPARATE things, always have been, always will be. The "exertion" one feels at the end of a "tiring" 4 hour match is all in the head. There was no sweat broken. There was no PHYSICALITY. Your legs DID NOT get a a work out, in fact, THEY FELL ASLEEP. That's the "fatigue" you feel.

Moving your pawn a whole 2 inches in the span of 5 minutes doesn't even burn as much calories as blinking your eyes. COME ON!!!!

Thinking about your move hard enough can still make you burn many calories.

At some point, when you think too much, you fatigue yourself for nothing and pour game quality do down, like in any other sport.

my feet and hand are separate things too, doesn't mean i dont use them together. The tiring I feel and anyone else feels while running a 5 k is all in our head too! Surpassing this is one of the reasons why we improve in sports! (like chess)

It is a sport in all but the physical aspect since despite its necessity, it is not the focus of the game. Perhaps it should be called a mental sport. However, why does it matter?
