2. e3 is unambitious, slow, and silly and makes it easier to for black, not harder...
1. ...Nf6 doesn't suck and is perfectly fine (and the King's Indian is way cooler than the Queen's Gambit) and if you think d5 is better because of the queen's gambit...
well...after 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 d5, oh look it's a QGD

e4 or d4? They're both completely fine. The one thing I think d4 has that e4 doesn't is that Black can play Center Counter against e4. I think there's a 1 d4 e4, but I can't think of the name.
e4 and d4 are both great moves. I learned that e4 was better from the books I read to learn chess. I think because e4 opens up KB, allowing Kingside castling quicker, and Kingside's supposed to be safer.
Either way is fine. You can't say e4 is better than d4 or vice versa.
