It depends in which position. Both seem pretty OK in the first move, though.
1.e4 is slightly overrated by a few players, such as Bobby Fischer, but similar claims for 1.d4 are simply loony.
Ironically, the opening move that assures maximum mobility for white no matter how black responds is 1.e3. Anyone want to claim that is best?
