what is better? it seems one side says e4 is better because white is able to quickly get to safety by castling. so what is the best move? i've heard from several players who were rated up near the highest say e4 is the best for white and the best reply is e5. hmm just something to argue about and i'd like to see some good comments to get a better footing on what i play.

In the end, does it really matter? The result will still be the same, regardless of which opening you choose.

You've played 1134 games on here. I don't think that means you're inexperienced!
Do you really not know the basic differences between 1.d4 & 1.e4?

I've played most of the openings, although in limited experience, and would have to say e4. Of course it's subject to playing style and such, But playing as black against the English or queens gambit just doesn't scare me as much as the kings gambit.
