Me too. At least according to Fritz, black has a very slight advantage from the first move, but I tend to do alright.

You've hit 1850 on this site. I find that a bit strange.

I believe that you can reach over 1800 kinda easily by just being really good at attacking with tactics and defending/guarding against them (double checks, discovered checks, forks, skewers, pins, sacrifices, etc.). Maybe also being good in at least one opening. I don't think it's really strange that Kmac was once over 1800 but doesn't know which opening move is the best. Players that are over 1900 probably wouldn't know. Does anyone really know what move is the best? Is there really a best move? I think a lot of people just have a lot of different opinions. I'm not sure there is a best move. I'm kinda partial to c4, though. 🙂

p.s. Weyerstrass plays c4 almost all the time as his opening move as white, i think. And he is rated 2451 (340 wins - 0 losses). So if you want a good first move Kmac, there ya go. 😉
Good luck!

i've played c4 but some games i don't prefer so i try to avoid them. my opening play did not launch me to 1850. studying the important parts of the game did! endgames and middle games. sam does it matter if your suprised i reached 1850? i read in sierwans book that a master sat at a board and ran down 50 minutes thinking of the first move to make. this may seem dumb which is but sometimes it is difficult. which game do i want to play do i want tactical or positional. do i want to face a french or a kings indian. maybe someday if you study hard enough you'll find the "perfect opening move" maybe you'll touch 1800 for once... as for rahim you are just like fischer in the chess world. you may be a good player but you talk so much crap nobody likes you. if you arent here for cc games then leave

- d4 or e4? c4!
- d4, c4 or e4? Nf3!

Look at the energy a certain GK uses and you can even play 1. e3 like he did versus deep blue.

Certainly not true.

Until I played here I probably played 12 league games, 12 tournament games, 6 County games and 12 rapidplay games plus say 50 casual blitz games, a total of 92 games a year. Over a 20 year period that is 1840 games. In fact it would take me 100 years to reach 10000 games and I would hardly call myself inexperienced.

I disagree, I've been playing 1. Nf3 a lot lately in my games with white, especially against the higher rated opponents, and got some very nice and agressive position out of it. 1. d4 and 1. e4 aren't the only good possibilities...
Nf3, c4, and d4 all generally lead to the same type of games except that sometimes with Nf3 you don't play for the center.

e4 is best. Bobby Fischer said so. It must be true.

wow! in the past 2 years I've only played 250 here, 740 on icc and 280 on fics. so around 1300 with the few guest games on playchess.

then again, my CTS addiction adds into the mix 90761 problems solved, so I guess that explains the difference a bit...

i started out at 1100. rapid developement i guess. over cc real time games i learned how to play and learned many positions. so then i got a basic middle game ideas. i also read about 10 books throughout this time. then i came to rhp to make better moves and learn more. so far i've come from 1100 to the highest i've ever been 1850.

I hit 1500's here pretty much straight away, but I think I had already done some thousands of CTS problems by then... the first human I ever played was my 1st game here.

oh boy, that game is HORRIBLE!! 😵 no way was I in the 1500's yet! even 1100 might be pushing it.

lol. once i hit 1500 i made it my duty to beat all the people who had beaten me. i soon said screw that after i sloughtered a few and proved my dominance over those who beat me ;-). i have looked at some old games and looked at the moves i made and i would not in a million years play those moves again. lol amazing how the brain evolves.
