Excellent Smyslov game

Amazing coincidence.

The Edinburgh Club did not have a copy of the Smyslov book (it was out).
Yesterday! I picked up a copy of the 1957 book for £2.50 along with a
few others.

The Vidmar game has been left out.

Good game. Yes an unmolested flank attack is what it's all about.
(and getting that Knight to f5).
But again I stress if Black knows what you are up to and 0-0-0 then
it's a different game.

When I'm not playing the Danish or Scotch at blitz I sometimes troop it out.
Had a few with this double sac theme against the unwary.

The original edition of Smyslov's "1937-1951" collection, called "Izbrannye partii" (selected games), doesn't have this game either -- well, at least the authorised German translation (Sportverlag 1954) doesn't.

Really? How many games does it have?

Clarke took out 11 games and added 18. There are 67 games in
Clarkes edition so his source, and Clarke does say he transalted from
the Russian edition must have had 60 games in it.

If it's missing from the German edition then you have to wonder why
this game was given the heave ho everytime a translator got their hands on it.

Perphaps Smyslov did not rate it worthy enough for inclussion in the original?
Clarke left in 4 games from Groningen 1946 so perhaps Smylov thought 4 games
from Groningen was enough and left it out.

But apparently it appears again in the 1935-57 collection of his best games
published in the Czech Republic....how odd.

Sixty games in the Sportverlag edition, which I think is tranlsated from the original without changes. And indeed there are four games from Groningen 1946 in there. So yes, I'd say Smyslov just didn't rate it highly enough, at least when he was writing the original book back in the '50s.

So the 'Smystery' has been solved.

My Best Games Vol 1 1935-1957 includes at least game which Smyslov
did not think was one of his best games........Marketing.
