Ah really? What is your BCF rapid grade and what is your playchess rating?

You can see my grade here. My ECF Rapidplay grade is 165.

And what is your playchess rating for

a) Bullet?
b) Blitz?

I asked this specifically to illustrate my point. You claim to be 200 points higher ie assuming you are 2000 here that would make you at least 2200 on playchess.

Can you show me any 2000ish rated player here who is at least 2000 on both blitz and bullet on playchess? It goes to show the real playing strength once databases and opening books are not in the equation.

I don't play bullet - it is a lottery, not chess.

I am not interested in playing blitz on-line, the difference is OTB.

Bullet can be a skill game. It depends on if you are a time player or someone who plays the board.

wouldn't that type of game end in a timeout like 9 out of 10 times?

Not as often as you think.

Yes, because of the lag on the internet connection over my wireless network. Thats what makes it a lottery. No skill is involved.

180 seconds is playable. I would class that as blitz but 120 seconds or 60 seconds is just plain ridiculous. I've seen and played that a few times but the play is abyssmal, not chess at all and certainly no skill involved. The games are riddled with blunders.

You know nothing at all, seeing particularly your lack of a playchess rating. See what ICC champ says about bullet chess http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullet_chess If bullet or blitz were lotteries then you would not have the same GMs dominating.

I went to watch some 1 min games on playchess yesterday, and was surprised how coherent some of the games the higher rated players played were. not anywhere near the slower games of course, but still it was pretty impressive how well they defended. it's a totally different game from slow chess, but I can see now how someone might like it. and it's certainly enjoyable to watch.

I can't even manage with 10 minute games though... I'm sure bullet games require skills as well, it's just different skills compared to what slower chess requires.

Bullet is complete garbage as far as I'm concerned. It's not uncommon for players to make RANDOM moves just to win on time control. It doesn't matter if you lost a queen, a rook, a bishop and a knight, if you saved 15 seconds, it's worth it. I've seen terrible players become good bullet players. It's not worth anything. When you have recommendations like these: "awkeye recommends using an optical mouse and taking breaks to avoid hand injury." you know something isn't right. I agree that it is in many ways a lottery and I wouldn't dare to even call it chess.

It takes 5 second just to register a move with the lag on my wireless connection so I can make 12 moves in 60 seconds - need to win pretty quickly then. I can play bullet and I can win OTB with 60 seconds and I will comprehensively beat players rated 1200 or even 1500-1700 at bullet but that doesn't mean it is not a lottery.
