I can only speak from experience. Obviously you have to be able to see what's relevant in a position, i mean being able to calculate many moves ahead in completely irrelevant lines is not going to get you anywhere but i always find problems when in complex positions i have to decipher just 4-5 moves deep in say 3 seperate lines.
These types of positions occur again and again and although made somewhat easier in CC play it's in the OTB format that i really struggle.

It's this type of 3-4 branch analysis that the real strong players excel! thats why they are stronger players, and no amount of telling me to look for common sense moves 2-3 plies deep will change my opinion on that.
