Originally posted by GambitzoidThat's not the line I suggested.I don't like that line any more than you do.I suggested the Larsen variation. It features a kingside fianchetto,so the argument someone else made about locking in the bishop is also non valid. It is not slow, and black is certainly not destined to defensive play.Did you see some of Bent Larsen's games? He sure was no passive player.
The philidor is very slow and does not give enough initiative to black...
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 d6
3. d4 exd4
4. Nxd4 Nf6
5. Nc3 Be7
6. Qf3 O-O
7. Nf5 +=
After this game, black is destined to a defensive battle, and paultopia certainly seems to be an attacking player, even more so with an antiquated defense like the philidor
And do you realise that antiques are very valuable 🙂

Originally posted by egsmithYou can play 3. c4 as white to stop a sicilian. It's then really a KI, in which case you can screw some Sicilian players into something they don't wanna play.
I guess I should have ended that post "as white". If all I had to do was play c4 to beat a sicilian my world would be a much happier place...
Yes, I have seen Bent Larsen's games, but then again he is one of the greatest players of all time...
Larsen won with his philidor because it was a novelty, I doubt that today you could beat a grandmaster with any type of philidor...
The philidor is definitely slower than 2...Nc6, and the fianchetto requires two moves so it is slower than a classic bishop development...
I don't think the philidor is useless at our level, it is quite solid and valuable for drawing but its attacking chances are weak...
Originally posted by GambitzoidI didn't mention Larsen because he won with this opening.I mentioned him because of his playing style. He was an attacking player, and would never use a passive opneing. And he did use this one.

I couldn't beat a GM regardless what opening I play.Or what he plays, for that matter.
Philidor,Larsen variation is slower than some other defenses, yes, but not really slow.
It is a risky line with chances for both sides.Black definately has plenty of attacking chances.
You don't have to like it,but your statements are not correct,IMO.
Thanks everyone.
You can tell I'm desperate when I list the pirc as #2. I've never played that thing, and don't trust it, although every time someone plays it against me, I lose -- albeit generally by attacking it so violently that I blunder.
Funny enough, the one time I played the french as black I won. granted, I chose it for psychological reasons.
I'd love to play the latvian if it weren't totally unsound in every way.
I guess e5 it is. God help me.
Sooo.... Petrof or Marshall Attack? I must admit, anything associated with Frank Marshall has a certain appeal 🙂 Nonetheless, I know the petrof is solid.
Or philidor, I guess... ?
