Soooo... wanna tell me about the Larsen variation? :-)
although I must confess, I mostly know Larsen for his truly spectacular losses, mainly to Tal...

and then there's...

1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 d6
3. d4 exd
4. Nxd4
and then some combination of ..Nc6, ..g6, and ...Bg7. If white has got some and castles long, Black can use the open b-file (from Nd4 x c6 ...bxc6) and the Bg7 to lay it down. SirLoseALot can prolly give you the real line!

desperation?
Ok,the Philidor,Larsen variation. It's one of the easiest openings to play.Black uses some simple ideas: develop, castle kingside, place a rook on e8 and a knight on c6,pawnstorm on queenside.
1.e4,e5
2.Nf3,d6
3.d4,exd4
4.Nxd4,g6
5.Nc3,Bg7
6.Be3,Nf6
7.Qd2,O-O
8.O-O-O,Nc6
9.f3,Re8
and black has reached the desired position. All elements for a good battle are presented.Nothing lame or boring about this line.Often white takes on c6,creating a half-open b-file,which black can use very well.Replay some games, see if you like it 🙂

King's Indian is played in response to 1. d4. Are you trying to say you play it against 1. e4 somehow?
Sorry didn't mean to say that (although classical KID does have e4 being played so it could transpose. Whether it would or not is another matter). The King's Indian Defence is my choice against d4.
Originally posted by SirLoseALotLarsen is, probably, OK, but don't overestimate it too. I think Dragon's open c-file is better than open e-file in 0-0-0/0-0 positions. I met this variation just once and scored a quick victory against much higher rated player (which says nothing, of course😀).

Originally posted by TovMauzerI only ever said it was a decent line. It's not the all time best opening, but with the criteria paul set,it's a very good option,IMO.

Originally posted by egsmithI never play e4 when I open with d4. What I really hate is that French transposition that black players tend to try, with 1.d4 e6, and then hoping I play e4 and then they play d5. This is why I never play e4, otherwise I would be playing French all the time as white, as a lot of RHP players love this transposition, it is common on UChess aswell.
One nice thing about the sicilian, you can tranpose to it from just about anywhere, including 1.d4.
1. d4 d6 2. e4 g6
and welcome back to theory...
