I don't know why but I hate the Ruy Lopez. 😠 Anyone want to say anything about that or how they feel about the Ruy Lopez? 😕

No but the french is soooo dull. It is like the black player is trying to bore white to death.

I've never played a dull game with or against the French, it must be you making the games dull.

Which variations have you been playing? The Winawer in particular gets a bad rap sometimes, but it's still very sharp.

I used to feel the CK was pretty dull until I saw what Vovochka and procyk regularly did with it.

Is there a more strategically rich position in any other opening than this one, from the mainline of the Closed? No pieces or pawns have been exchanged. Many pawn breaks are available to either side, the pieces have so many reasonable circuits to try out. I wouldn't say that I hate it because of this - but I do find it the most daunting of chess openings as a result.

You can make the French VERY interesting:

Game 967958
Game 984372
Game 2118293

I have another Milner-Barry Gambit game in progress, hopefully it will be as tactically rich as these ones.

Almost every time I set up a board for decor, I set up the Closed Ruy (or Chigorin Variation). I just love looking at it. For me, it is almost archetypal of the game.

Read Jansa's book "Dynamic Strategy in Opening".

Is this the position?

Yeah, except the position is a move behind. I go ahead and put the Bishop on c2. And, you can then sense all the potential energy on the board 🙂
