If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win but think you can't,
It's almost certain you won't.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can

So very true. But only secondary compared to what really counts: be good at what you do.

eh. It is often just a waste of time. However after dropping a piece if I still have activity, I often play on until my opponent demonstrates that they have a plan for winning that I can't stop. Once they start moving down the right path, I usually resign unless tactics abound.

The stronger and the faster are the ones who think (know) that they can win.

What strikes me as curious is, I am a 1200+ player and am optimistic but 2 replies are pessimistic and its from 1600+ players.

I didn't realise 1600+ was such a paranoid territory.

It's lonely at the top for a reason.

I NEVER resign a game. Always a chance for a blunder or a stalemate. Till the bitter end, I always say. Get some.

Maybe you pessimistic because you play players around you rating.

The higher you get, the less blunders and more resignations and less checkmates.

Here's my 2 cents.
I don't resign quick, just for the simple fact that I want to see how my opponant beats me. Understand that I'm a "new" player at the game, with an everage rating and I want to learn from it!
If I have an high ranked player against me I also give him a message with more or less the same content as written to the above here.

As Rahim as said, the higher the rating, the bigger the importance of being a piece down. If im a knight or bishop down AND have no opportunities to even the situation then thats it, im out! Resignation! Im not going to waste both mine and my opponents time by hoping for a blunder.
If you can't prove you've won, you really haven't.
